Sun SPARC systems

The Sun SPARC range of systems covers a wide range of systems which Sun introduced a the end of the 1980s and were supplied through to the mid 1990s. They were all based around the 'New' processor technology Sun introduced, the SPARC architecture. This was a 32 bit RISC processor family which was introduced to replace the ageing Motorola 68000 CISC based systems which Sun then had. The range included the original Sun 4 systems, the innovative SPARCstation 1 which was ground breaking in many ways, through to Sun's first serious multiprocessor systems the 1000 and 2000 (the 6XX range came before this, but had limited expansion compared to the 1000/2000).

SPARC Server range

3000 - Tower format, 1 - 6 CPU SCSI based system, comprising 1 - 6 160 - 336Mhz CPUs, up to 24Gb mem, 1 - 10 off SCSI disks typically 9 - 36Gb, CD and optional tape.

4000 - Rack mount or Tower format, 1 - 14 CPU SCSI based system, comprising 1 - 6 160 - 336Mhz CPUs, up to 24Gb mem, SCSI and Fibre Channel options, CD and optional tape.

5000 - Rack system, 1 - 14 CPU SCSI based system, comprising 1 - 14 160 - 336Mhz CPUs, up to 24Gb mem, SCSI and Fibre Channel options, CD and optional tape.

EX500 range

3500 - Tower format, 1 - 6 CPU SCSI/Fibre based system, comprising 1 - 6 336 - 460Mhz CPUs, up to 24Gb mem, 1 - 8 off Fibre Channel disks typically 9 - 36Gb, CD and optional tape.

4500 - Rack mount or Tower format, 1 - 14 CPU SCSI/Fibre based system, comprising 1 - 6 336 - 460Mhz CPUs, up to 24Gb mem, SCSI and Fibre Channel options, CD and optional tape.

5500 - Rack system, 1 - 14 CPU SCSI/Fibre based system, comprising 1 - 14 336 - 460Mhz CPUs, up to 24Gb mem, SCSI and Fibre Channel options, CD and optional tape.

EX800 range

3800 - Rack mount, 2 - 8 CPU SCSI/Fibre based system, comprising 2 - 8 750Mhz - 1.2Ghz CPUs, up to 64Gb mem, dual cPCI backplanes.

4800 - Rack mount, 2 - 12 CPU SCSI/Fibre based system, comprising 2 - 12 750Mhz - 1.2Ghz CPUs, up to 96Gb mem, dual PCI or cPCI backplanes.

4810 - Rack system, 2 - 12 CPU SCSI/Fibre based system, comprising 2 - 12 750Mhz - 1.2Ghz CPUs, up to 96Gb mem, dual PCI backplanes.

6800 - Rack system, 2 - 24 CPU SCSI based system, comprising 2 - 24 336 - 750Mhz - 1.2Ghz CPUs, up to 96Gb mem, quad PCI or cPCI backplanes.

EX900 range
